Outpatient Services are those that require a stay of less than 24 hours in the hospital. Many procedures that used to require a day or more in the hospital have been simplified by technology and can now be safely performed and patients can generally go home in as little as a few hours.  We can see how your heart moves without opening your chest.  We can check your bronchial tubes or colon for disease with the use of a camera, scope and a tube.

Mostly, outpatient stays are more convenient to the patient, do not carry the risk they used to, and cost less.

Gastrointestinal (GI) Short Stay

The GI department at Deaconess ranked in the Top 10% in the nation for GI care and the Gastrointestinal Care Excellence Award.

  • Upper Endoscopy uses a thin, flexible tube to look inside the esophagus, stomach and part of the small intestine.  Sedation is often used during this procedure.
  • Colonoscopy uses a narrow, flexible instrument to look at the large intestine and part of the lower small intestine.  Sedation is often used during this procedure.
  • ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) is similar to the upper endoscopy, but also uses dye to study the ducts of the gallbladder, pancreas and liver.  Sedation is also used during this procedure.
  • Endoscopic Ultrasound uses sound waves to gather information about an area of disease inside the GI tract.
  • CT and ultrasound biopsies
  • Paracentesis removing fluid from abdominal cavity as a treatment or diagnostic tool
  • Our new BRAVO pH system collects 48 hours of data and records it on a pager-sized recorder.  The information is then downloaded and interpreted by the MD.  This replaces previous testing requiring a tube in the nose.
  • Esophageal motility studies record the ability of the esophagus to function normally while swallowing.
  • Many procedures use X rays and dye to look at internal organs.

Cardiac Short Stay Unit

Cardiac Short Stay has assembled many of the tests that make Deaconess #1 in the state for overall cardiac care, and numerous other awards.  Testing is done by expert staff with the top equipment.  Some of the procedures are:

  • Cardiac catheterization to look for blocked coronary arteries
  • Angioplasty, Stent, Rotoblater for repair and removal of debris from the arteries
  • Ablation to repair the area of the heart causing abnormal heart rhythm
  • Electrophysiologic studies to check correct blood flow.
  • Atrial Septal Defect Repair to correct movement of blood between the chambers of the heart
  • Implantable cardiac defibrillators to correct heart rhythm
  • Mini-Maze Thoracoscopy procedure for treatment of abnormal rhythm of the heart (fibrillation)
  • Baclofen pump trials for spastic movement most often seen in para/quadraplegics
  • Pacemakers to maintain steady heart rhythm
  • Port placements for infusion of drugs (usually chemotherapy)
  • Kyphoplasty/vertebroplasty for osteoporosis
