Did you know?
Herbal supplements can affect your surgery?  The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) recommends stopping supplements at least two weeks before surgery.
Deaconess Medical Center is committed to providing the best equipment, staff and support services needed to deliver excellent surgical care.  Both inpatient and outpatient surgery are available.

Our Preassessment Clinic helps patients know what to expect before and after surgery.  Our staff collect needed information to avoid delays on the day of surgery, and Deaconess provides education regarding aftercare.  A friend or family member can generally stay with you up until surgery, be updated by your surgeon (if you choose) and meet you afterwards.  It often helps to have an additional person around when receiving directions and instructions.

“Scope” Procedures for Repair of the Body or Removal of an Organ

Deaconess keeps the patient in mind and is committed to providing the least traumatic treatment possible for our patients, including the availability of “scopes” such laparoscopes.  These tube-like instruments allow physicians to see, assess, and treat your body without the need for a large incision.  The magnification and the ability to attach instruments and cameras to these devices can be used for such diverse procedures as repairing the architecture of a shoulder to removing diseased kidneys and gallbladders.

Cryoablation  for Prostate Cancer

Although it’s not for everybody, cryoablation is a minimally invasive treatment for prostate cancer.  It freezes the prostate to kill the cancer cells.  Patients only need to stay in the hospital for 24 hours, have less postoperative complications, and experience a much quicker recovery.

Cryosurgery for Bone Tumors

This treatment for cancerous or noncancerous tumors involves surgically removing the tumor and then freezing the surrounding area to kill any lingering cells to prevent recurrence.

Deep Brain Stimulation

This procedure is used to treat Parkinson’s disease and essential tremors.  It involves using stimulation through a wire in the brain to find the portion of the brain that is causing the tremors.  A wire is then placed in that spot and attached to a battery to block the nerve messages that cause the tremors.
